Australian Shepherd

Family: livestock, herding
Area of Origin: United States
Average Size of Male: Height: 20 - 23 inches, Weight: 50 - 65 pounds
Average Size of Female: Height: 18 - 21 inches, Weight: 40 - 55 pounds

History of the Australian Shepherd Breed

The breed developed in the United States to be used as a herding dog. However, the misnomer of Australian shepherd likely comes from the fact that the ancestors of this dog came to America by way of Australia. Some claim that the Basque people of Europe settled temporarily, with their sheepdogs, in Australia, until they moved to the western United States. Americans working the sheep herds named the dogs "Australian shepherds" because of the dogs previous residence. The developing breed adapted well and gained some popularity. But it was in the 1950s that the Australian shepherd was featured as a trick-dog act in rodeos and film, thereby increasing its popularity in the United States. Finally, in 1993, the AKC recognized the Australian shepherd. This breed is popular today for many reasons: it is used as a working ranch dog, a guide dog for the blind a
nd hearing dog for the deaf as a pet therapy dog, a drug detecting dog, and a search-and-rescue dog.

Size and Appearance of the Australian Shepherd Breed

Slightly longer than it is tall, the front legs of the Australian shepherd are strong and straight with oval bone. The almond-shaped eyes can be blue, brown, or amber and offer an eager, intelligent expression. The moderately-sized ears are triangular in shape and set high on the headmerles and blacks, the nose is black, and in red merles and reds, the nose is liver. The teeth meet in either a level or scissors bite. The strong neck is moderately long and slightly arched, blending nicely into the shoulders. The tail is usually straight and can be docked or naturally bobbed. The double coat of the Australian shepherd consists of a straight or wavy outer coat of medium texture. It is weather resistant. The undercoat varies depending on the climate. There is usually a nice mane and frill around the neck. The coat comes in the following colors: blue merle, black, red merle, red (with or without white markings and/or tan points). The gait of this breed is best described as smooth, free, and easy.

Australian Shepherd Recommended Maintenance

Generally, the coat of this breed is quite easy to groom. Simply brush or comb the coat a couple of times a week using a firm bristle brush. Be sure to check for burrs and such if the dog is outside. Bathing should only be done when necessary. This breed is considered to be an average shedder. It is important that the Australian shepherd is provided with daily mental and physical exercise. Long walks and games are suggested, as well as the chance to run and play in a safe area. This is a social breed, so it needs to spend plenty of time with its family and should not be tied out in the yard all day.

Small Dogs

Size
Mainly a small dog is considered to weigh less than 22lbs or be shorter than 16 inches.Even though a few are borderline between small and medium sized.

Some breeds, such as the Chihuahua, are the smallest of the small... weighing in at only 6 to 8 pounds and standing only 6 to 10 inches tall. While the larger of the small breeds like the Staffordshire Bull Terrier weigh 24 to 36 pounds and stand at 14 to 16 inches tall. Now u have to decide if you want a really small dog like a Chihuahua or if you don't mind a larger small dog like a Staffordshire Bull Terrier. It might not bother you either way. The really small guys are really easier to pick-up, transport, and carry around!

Trainability

A small breed can be trained to learn commands some dogs learn those commands as faster than others. A fast learning breed is much easier to train and will know more commands in a short period of time. While a slower learning breed requires more patience and time to train.

Shedding

Many small dogs shed virtually no hair. some people hate dog hair and don't have for extra time to vacuuming, then one of these breeds is right for you choose a breed with less than 2 stars for Shedding Some other breeds shed a moderate amount of hair: you'll find some stuck to your carpet, clothes and couch. If you don't mind a little hair in your home like this, then you have a wider variety of breeds to choose from than just the low shedders choose a breed with 7 stars, or less, for Shedding.

Low Maintenance

Small dog maintenance comes down to two things: brushing and vacuuming.
